Amazing little Atmos av receiver

So ... after having Yamaha receivers for years, I thought it was a good idea to get a soundbar after moving to a new house! Yes - there was a wife involved who did not want the wires and mess. Warning! You can never accept the surround sound from a soundbar once you've had a discrete system and after a year and a half I opted to go for a Yamaha 683. Great amp but, after looking at the monster in its box, I realised that most of the receivers do not fit into our John Lewis wooden TV stand. I got rid of my PC World cheap unit which would have accommodated the Yamaha which is large but not unusual. It was either a new TV glass/chrome stand which shows all the wires or a smaller AMP. After a lot of research, I came across this Sony and realised that it did everything I wanted it to do and was the smallest ATMOS RV receiver available in the UK. No multi-room, no Wi-Fi linking to expensive speakers and no Spotify but ... I never really needed this anyway. And wow!! This is a great AMP that performs amazingly well with my 2016 LG TV and passes through HDR, Dolby Vision and Atmos from Netflix, SKY etc. My 3D movies work well and although the on-screen GUI is simple - it works. I am so glad I went back to proper speakers. My wife is happy I'm happy and in reality, the wooden, stylish TV cabinet hides the wires. So far, the setup is 5.1 and I am going to wait to see if ATMOS speakers get cheaper but the system, with cheap Pioneer 5.1 speakers sounds amazing and no dependence on being in a perfect sitting room that doesn't exist. Very happy! (Purchased from Richer Sounds).

Sound keeps cutting out

I purchased this about 6 months ago. After about 20 minutes, the sound keeps cutting out. I then need to restart my complete system to get the sound back on. The about 15-20 minutes, it cuts off again. You can hear an audible 'click' as it turns off the sound. Any ideas why its doing this? Purchased online from Best Buy

Bad and no one has ever seen the problem. No atmos sound so bad for me. I don't like the sound or the meny on the receiver since it can't even get a signal on the screen. Bad thing for the Playstation 4K not to be possible to use 4k useless for me, so I don't think I will be a good idea to use it

I wish I noticed the crappy FM antenna connection. Hopefully there is a coax conversion adapter so I can use my outside roof antenna for quality reception.

Our old Onkyo gave up the ghost so opted for this unit. Compared to others in the market place, was a tad dubious to how it would work due to its price ... Worries Over. Easy to set up using old wiring sytem (5.1 surround) to Kef speakers. Options according to what you are listening to or watching is easiy accessible and easy to change. Then there's the Bluetooth connection, how easy is that? Connected within seconds and pumping out some very clear sounds. Used it now for a few weeks and so pleased we opted for this unit (Sony ST-DH790) purchased from Richer Sounds. As far as home system (not bespoke room for theatre, but average open lounge with furniture, ornaments and pictures which will effect the sound for the purests) goes, does exactly what we needed and impressed with the drifting sounds reflected in the films/programmes we watch.

Bought this unit to replace my old trusty STA-DA5700ES. What a disappointment, Pitiful programming GUI. Lots of missing functions (Where's the test tone, phase detection?) Signal drop out when connected to Sky Q, very , very poor, DO NOT BUY !!!. Sent it back for refund, loyal exclusive SONY buyer for years, any more of this and I'm done with SONY products

eARC allows for HD sound and ease of operation

I picked this up after upgrading my TV and needed an eARC compatible receiver to complete my audio needs. Atmos sounds awesome and the receiver is capable of outputting 4K/60 (which includes the majority of devices) and I’ve simply put the 4K/120 straight to my TV. I don’t imagine I will be buying a lot of 120hz devices, but the TV has space for two of them, with the rest being able connect to the TV also, or direct to the receiver. The receiver is smaller in height than my previous one, making fitting it in a breeze. The lack of pluggable speakers connections (only the front l and r have them) means no banana plugs on Center and Surround Left/Right connections may mean you might want to check your wire gage, but otherwise a great package at a good price.

I bought the Sony 7.2 Home Theater AV receiver as a Christmas gift for the family. The setup of my speakers and configuring the receiver was simple and seamless. I love the way it automatically integrated into cable and TV remote, without any interaction on my part and my TV isn't a Sony TV. I just worked! Big thumbs up for the easy setup and integration, regardless of the TV brand. The sound is fantastic and I click one button on my cable remote and it turns on the TV, cable box, and Sony receiver all at once.

Bought this box to replace my old Denon. The only thing which was a bit frustrating is the setup. You need the TV to set the unit up really. Then the Easy setup after the 3rd time through figuring how the buttons wanted to be entered it took. I guess I like buttons.The base and treble range is not that great. I did not notice too much difference with the EQ. Also there is FM but no AM for the tuner? AM is bad these days due to so much electrical noise but in the event of an emergency its used. The only mechanical issue is the snap connectors for the surround connections. One is loose, I could squeeze down on it and feels tight. The wire gauge is 16 so it is big enough.

Adjust the position of the supplied FM wire antenna (aerial) to a place where the reception condition is good.

It is a beautiful machine for the money, however if you are going to install an FM Stereo Tuner, have a decent Antenna Input. Either Dipole or Coax. The single wire antenna on a crazy insert doesn't cut it. If you live in exurbs or further, it is of no help!!! Next time remove the Tuner and give everyone a super price break. Otherwise, excellent!

Purchased this a month ago, and have been very pleased with the sound. I expected good surround from a Sony and have not been disappointed, what I was very surprised by was the sound through the bluetooth feature, connected to the NWA-55 it produces a very good quality music listening experience. This receiver is easy to set up with great features and for the price it was the only way I was going to be able to experience ATMOS at home. This is an upgrade from a Sony receiver that I have used for almost 10 years and it still works great.

My Yamaha RXV-675 recently bit the bullet after years of good service. The timing for it's passing was not the right time to look for a replacement on the market . Went and ordered another make that was available only to get a notice 2 days after it was suppose to arrive that the delivery date was unknown from the shipper. I then went on another hunting trip to find a replacement. I actually stumbled upon this Sony STR-DH790 by accident as I was looking for something else with more options. There were 7 units available for sale and by the time I had completed the purchase there were none. This unit is the most simple and easiest A/V Receiver that I have ever owned. The sound levels are solid and the tone levels along with the easy setup make this unit a Top Shelf Winner. The unit has a E-Arc HDMI along with a optical input to give the user the ability to get the user's desired sound effect from the source the user selects. You can't go wrong with the Sony STR-DH790. This unit gives the user the best bang for the buck!

This receiver surprised me. I thought for the price that I was going to get something that sort of worked but had a lot of strange quirks. That is not the case here. The receiver has exceeded my expectations in performance and build quality. There is one design flaw that keeps me from rating it 5 stars. The surround speaker connections should not be cheap spring terminals. Not only are they spring terminals, but they are small spring terminals that are designed to accept 16 gauge wire or smaller. My surround speaker wiring is 14 gauge. I was able to make it work, but it wasn't easy. Even at this price point there is not reason why Sony can't include binding post connections for all speaker connectors. This design choice was obviously one made to keep manufacturing costs down, but it is hurting sales of this model. As for the setup, it is just ok. The on-screen menus look a little like an afterthought. Honestly I am able to do most of what I need using the receiver display, and you can actually do all of it that way if you want. You just need to get used to navigating the menus using the remote control. The HDMI switching feature works better than I thought it would. You just need to know where the settings are in the menu to get it to work the way you want. For example I had to look around for a little while to find the feature that lets you watch sources connected to the receiver without turning on the receiver. Once I found it, it worked the way I had planned. After watching a movie the receiver was warm to the touch, but not hot, and we had the volume up quite a bit. I was impressed as the receiver is in a TV stand where it is mosly enclosed. All in all this is a great receiver. For <$400 you can't beat the features and performance.

I bought this unit yesterday and so far so good! Love the sound quality and it interfaces well with my 900F TV. Was able to eliminate the need for using optical cable that was needed with a Harmon Kardon AV1610 that it is replacing. Now runs with e-arc. Only negative is cheaper plastic speaker ports for surround speakers.

I bought it about 2 months ago and it sounds great! It has all the features I could possibly want. The only issue I have is that there is no sound upon initial power up unless I open the Netflix app. It is connect to my X900H via eARC. Once I open Netflix it starts to work for all other apps.

Have used it for about 2 months. Absolutely great receiver! Connection very easy. Calibration took a bit to figure out which setup I was using. Once loaded, no more problems. Power is really good, Bluetooth connection was seamless, and getting the tv to talk to it was easy. Finding all the shortcuts has been fun. It probably does more but I’ve got it set up where I want it.

Great sound with a fairly easy setup. Super value, no need to spend more on a 7.1 setup. Connected via eARC with TV and media unit, works seamlessly. Dolby processing really enhances the sound field. Speaker connections are easy, something my older more expensive receiver made difficult. My only complaint, I'd like a brighter display. Even the brightest setting is dim.

Bought this as a two zone 4K pass through AVR for a new home theatre system. Replaced a 10 yr old Sony receiver that worked great but didn’t support 4K. The audio in Zone 2 of this new receiver is analog only, can not directly stream digital audio to Zone 2. Can stream music from a separate device via Chromecast or Apple Play. My old receiver did not have this limitation. Would not buy this new receiver again.

Nice capabilities for your basic 7.2 or 5.1.2 requirements. I like the versatility of the second zone/5.1.2/7.2 terminals. One of the best features is the auto calibration. This is a powerful tool. Loved its compact size compared to others in its class. I purchased two fans to keep it cool. Menu navigation interface leaves a lot to be desired. You have to really read the online manual to understand and work on the more advanced settings. It is not intuitive at all.

I purchased this unit a little over a month ago to replace an 20 yr. old 5.1 system that was incompatible with my new Blu-Ray player and big screen TV. It has integrated perfectly and has allowed me to reuse my original speakers that have always sounded great. I really like the calibration microphone feature that has provided a near perfect audio balance across the 5 channels I use. I also really like the fact that I can turn on the display and the DVD player and audio amp come up automatically thanks to the e-ARC connection. Works great and sounds excellent.

After buying a new 4k (Sony) TV I wanted to update and upgrade my all in one surround sound package, and allow 4k pass through. Given past good experiences with Sony synchronisation between TVs and AV amps, positive reviews and being in stock (given Covid the choice was slightly limited) I bout the STR-DH790. The speakers are connected to Polk TL1600 5.1 speakers and Sony BRAVIA KD43XH81 TV and Tivo V6. I also have Fire TV Stick, Apple TV and Nintendo Wii inputs. Set up was straight forward and although I have played with settings I settled for the auto-set up selection. Sound for movies and music is as impressive a my speakers and ears can cope with, so happy I did not spend any more on the amp. Blutooth connectivity for music is seamless and really easy. Interconnectivity (via HDMI) is good, so rationalises my remote control selection. Th one minor irritant is the menus - there are on screen and LED on the unit, neither are great, but to be fair they work and as you don't use them much after initial set up I can live with those short-comings.

Perfect balance of price and performance

We purchased this unit for it's excellent capability with the Sony television, Sony Blue Ray player, and Sony subwoofer. I was able to leverage speakers from a previous entertainment system that I was updating from (make sure to double-check ohms/max wattage), and the surround sound works perfectly. Video game systems also run through this to great affect, and it's beautiful sound for my 5.1 Dolby setup. (I hope for Dolby 7 someday...)

Purchased it thinking it did multi zones with the 7.2 nomenclature but it does not. ARC does not work with my XBR900 series tv with certified HDMI cables. Menu on this is like going back in time. Some settings can be done via the on screen display while other settings can only be done while fidgeting with the AVR looking at its calculator like display. PASS on this one. Avoid if possible. For the money you spend on it you can get better equipment from another brand.

Does everything I need with clean vibrant soundstage, and power to spare. Nice looking also. I actually prefer the silver brushed metal and Walnut systems they had back in the 70s and early 80s but, if you have to make it completely black, then the minimalist design and straightforward controls make this a winner in the design department as well. This is off topic but hey sony: how about making a new series of really decent but low price turntables and reel to reels I had one of your nice smaller reel to reels several years back but lost it in a fire would really like to have another one. I know it's considered a dead format but really for analog sound there's nothing that's better than a good clean tape.

This is my second unit. First stopped producing sound and was replaced. This one works well, good sound, Atmos is great. Problem with Bravia Sync. Keeps turning on and off after being shut off. First one had same problem until it died.

-Perform a power reset.
Turn off the unit.
Unplug the receivers' power cord (mains lead) from the electrical outlet.
Let the unit remain without power for 2 minutes.
Plug the power cord (mains lead) back into the electrical outlet.
-Try a different optical cable.
-Perform a factory reset
Turn off the receiver.
Hold down (power) on the receiver for 5 seconds.
“CLEARING” flashes on the display panel for a while, then changes to “CLEARED"

Ich wollte meinen betagten Receiver STR-DB940 erneuern, und habe mich für dieses Gerät entschieden. Merkwürdig war der 1. Eindruck, es fehlt ein Koxial-Antennenanaschluss, OK dachte ich, wird schon klappen. Gerat am 1.9.20 gekauft. Die 1. Probleme schon beim anschließen der Front-Lautsprecher, die Öffnungen für das Kabel waren schräg angeordnet (2/8 Uhr) statt waagerecht oder senkrecht angeordnet, eine fummelei. Als dann nun (fast) alles angeschlossen war, funktioniert mein Plattenspieler leider nicht ohne Ground (GND) Anschluß. Mit der total billig gemachten Wurfantenne war kein Radioempfang möglich, eine Koxial Anschluss für den "normalen" FM Anschluss fehlt! OK dachte ich, Blue Tooth war ja da, nur es gab keine Möglichkeit Internet-Radio zu hören, hier fehlt z.B. eine Sony-APP zur Ansteuerung. Wenn wenigstens noch ein LAN-Anschluß verfügbar wäre, könnte man noch anderweitig ausweichen, hat er aber auch nicht! Da es keine andere Möglichkeit gibt, eine andere Wurf- oder Zimmerantenne anzuschließen, werde ich diese Gerät nicht mehr behalten, und zurück geben! ENTTÄUSCHUNG PUR1

I've had this a week now. It sounds okay when you finally get it figured out, not great but good. The instructions should be written better for those of us that only buy something like this every decade or so. I'm not even an amateur audio guy I just want great surround sound and VERY easy setup. Once I manually set the speaker distances (kind of stumbled onto that option) the automatic speaker volume optimization worked great. It would not work at first on the stock speaker settings, it gave an error code for the left front speaker. As I said I stumbled on to the speaker distance manual setting and then it worked. No prompts to lead you there. Kind of frustrating for me, a true newby. Now when I power the audio on it is coming on in "mute" and I have to un mute it. Nothing I can find in the manual about that problem. Maybe I'll buy another brand next time.

Engineering Needs Help

I've only had it home and working for a week or so. I had to send it in for repairs within 24 hours of receiving it. There was no way to make the necessary setup, the remote didn't work, and there was no apparent work around on the unit. Additionally the RFI rejection is way sub-standard. This is my fourth major AV unit purchase but the first that has poor RFI rejection.
